Scent of Spring on the Shortest Day

From this day on the days will get longer, thank goodness. On these dark rainy days I get the wood stove going to make sure we don’t need to use electricity for cooking or hot water, and hope we can get through to the next day without having to use the generator.

It’s a warm winter so far with no frosts as yet, so we have roses blooming at the same time as the earlier spring bulbs are starting to pop up.

Please forgive the quick phone snaps. Life has been crazy busy and if I get the camera out I will never get to doing the post.

Thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for continuing to host this theme, even in the midst of getting ready for opening her garden to the public.

In a Vase on Monday – Sparkling Daffodils

I noticed tonight that the petals of the white daffodils are spangled with little sparkles, tiny reflections of the artificial light. I didn’t catch that in my photos, taken outside in a cold light just before yet another hail storm.
The first wave of daffodils and narcissi are going to seed, but some of the later yellow ones and the lovely white Thalia are coming on now, and there are still new ones coming up – I’m enjoying the Poet’s Narcissus and some truely radical ones which came in the mixed batch.

In a Vase on Monday, Citrus Colours

I have loved ‘citrus colours’ – lime green, orange, and lemon yellow since I was young, and as a student once went a whole year wearing lime green overalls with orange, red and pink underneath. For my vase today the first yellow daffodils contributed the lemon colour to the oranges, mandarins, and limes blown onto the ground after the storm on Friday.

Bulbs and bionics

It has been a beautiful Autumn weekend. We slept well in the cool night, enjoyed the first Sugar Baby watermelon with grapes and zucchini fritters for lunch, and felt very lucky to be here. Monarch butterflies are floating around and the bees are enjoying the late summer flowers. The vegetable garden is doing as well as can be expected, so I concentrated on planting the first of my bulb orders in this perfect sunny weather.

Asahi In a Vase on Monday

I wondered if Asahi tulips were named after a beer, for their lovely golden tones, but no. Much more appropriately it’s ‘morning/rising sun’. And they are absolutely stunning seen in the early morning with the sun shining through them, but I was too busy running until the sun was setting, so here they are in the last light of day.

In a Vase on Monday. – Spring Bulbs and Lambs

Arriving this week I was greeted by lambs on the lawn and the first of the ‘new’ Dutch Iris, “Autumn Princess”. I grabbed my camera to capture both before the lambs and mothers were ushered back into the driveway to make their way back through the fence.

The new Tulips are starting to bloom too, with Daydream opening a surprising lemon colour. It seems that the honey and apricot tones I was expecting only develop as the flowers age. Continue reading “In a Vase on Monday. – Spring Bulbs and Lambs”

Spring flowers in a Vase on a chilly Monday

The morning was so sparkling that I stopped for a photo opportunity while loading the car. It was -3 according to the new thermometer – it almost never gets this cold. In the greenhouse the poblano/ancho chillies are still producing. The lambs seemed happy enough – after weeks of rain and wind sunny and cold is probably preferable.
